Workers' strike in India halts soap opera production

A workers' strike has stopped production of popular soap operas in India.
Thousands of striking workers, who include on-set technicians and assistants, are demanding a pay increase, the BBC reported.
Workers claim production companies have backpedalled on the agreement they reached in October, the BBC said. Some of the striking workers earn as little as $15 a day.
Negotiations are at a standstill, with production companies and television stations saying they cannot afford to pay more for the shows.
Producers say the demanded raises would increase the cost of production by 300 per cent and they will not make the shows for such low profit margins.
Television channels claim they cannot pay more for the soap operas during the current economic crisis.
Meanwhile, the strike has left millions of viewers frustrated. Since Monday, all of India's major entertainment channels have been broadcasting reruns of their soaps.
