Parchment was invented in the Turkish city of Bergama and parchment art was an exclusively European practice until the early 16th century, when it travelled to South America. There it was used to embellish Holy Scriptures much like the miniature paintings are used to embellish our Vedas.
In 1986, Martha Ospina, a Columbian who was settled in Holland took up the cause of the dying craft. She was instrumental in reviving and spreading the craft worldwide.Ospina started taking parchment art classes and as the popularity of the craft grew, she started Pergamano International, a company dealing with the unique craft. Gaurangi Agarwal from Kolkata is the first internationally registered, parchment art teacher from Holland in Kolkata, India. She is currently pursuing higher parchment studies from Japan and England.
