It was Indira Gandhi, Mother in Law of Sonia Gandhi. Indira Gandhi was prime minister of India at that time.
I remember that time, 1984, very well. I was living in Delhi when the riots broke out.
It was bad of Indira Gandhi to attack Golden Temple but it was bad of the body guards to kill her also. A body guard is supposed to protect, whatever be the reason duty is duty and one is supposed to perform it keeping everything else aside. Some body would have killed Indira sooner or later but killing her like that was not good.
She was very famous, she had an charisma and charm that made people love her. She was killed at the peek of her fame and that made things worse. Sikhs became villains overnight all across India esp North India and particularly in Delhi. They were beated, killed, their houses looted and burnt down. I saw with my own eyes a 3 storey bunglow getting looted in R. K Puram, people running away with TV, VCRs, coolers etc. It was a chance of lifetime for them to loot and burn. I saw people taking car tyres, putting them over some poor Sikh's neck and setting it on fire, I saw taxi stands burnt to ground because they were operated by Sikhs, I saw Sikhs scared to death and with a heavy heart going to barber to get their hair cut to save their and their loved ones life, I saw barbers taking advantage of situation and increasing the price of haircut 10 to 20 times. Yes those were bad times. I did not see everything but I saw the aftermath and I could deduce what had happened.
But there was other side too, Sikhs asking for separate land, separate country maybe, militants taking out people travelling in state transport buses and shooting them down, Sikhs distributing sweets and celebrating when Indira Gandhi was killed.
Both sides were wrong, killing Indira was one thing but killing other innocent person for any reason whatsoever is wrong in my thinking. What did the child do to you? What did the helpless handicapped person did to you? What did a mother did to you? What did hatred get anyone?
Sikhs killed Hindus and Hindus killed Sikhs. That was one side. Sikhs saved Hindus and Hindus saved Sikhs, that was another side. We ourselves sheltered one Punjabi family in our house even though I did not like the happy look they were giving when we were watching Indira Gandhi's cremation on TV together in our house. But even as a kid I knew that they will be killed if they stay in their own house and their life is more important then my liking or dislikings. They had their own reasons and thats good as long as they don't hurt anyone. If Indira did something wrong then there is no point in hating all Hindus for that.
It was bad time and people repented a lot after that. Hindus and Sikhs have lived together for years with peace and brotherly love and they are doing that right now all across the globe. There is no point bringing back the old memories, no body learns from their mistake, it will just bring more hatred.
