The booming construction sector absorbs hundreds of workers from all over the country. Most of these workers have migrated to Kerala alone with families. For many poor families from the Indian states of Chennai, Bihar etc, Kerala is equivalent to the Middle East.
With the increased activity of building, the number of workers coming into the state has increased considerably. Even in Kerala, the majority of the constructions are focused around Kochi and Trivandrum cities. Hence the apprehensions of possibilities of slums creation is a genuine one in a place where the already exists severe shortage of land.
The phenomenal rise in land price is another cause for worry. Soon it is expected that none except the very rich can afford to have a
Kochi apartment or Trivandrum flat. If such a situation were to arise, it would tip the balance of the state’s economic balance in a negative manner.
Imagine a whole area inhabited only by a few very rich. There are many who scoff such apprehensions but is it that impossible to imagine. It is expected that despite the huge demand for space, the limitations in infrastructure will correct the wide fluctuations in land prices and the prices will soon steady itself.
