Gautam Gambhir escapes stronger penalty in Test incident
THE "COC KY" BATSMEN GAUTAM GAMBIR, WAS BANNED FOR THE LAST LAST AND FINAL TEST MATCH AGAINST AUSTRALIA.
HERE IS THE WHOLE STORY.
COC KY Indian batsman Gautam Gambhir was given an intriguing reprieve after he and Shane Watson were charged for disrespecting the game.
Batting kingpin Gambhir and allrounder Watson clashed on a fiery opening day of the third Test when tempers frayed on several occasions.
The pair regularly exchanged barbs and Gambhir even went a step further and elbowed the Australian fast bowler in the ribs while completing a second run in the 51st over. This prompted umpires Billy Bowden and Aleem Dar to cite both men for not playing "within the spirit of the game as well as within the laws of cricket".
Watson was charged with a level-one offence and faced a fine of up to 50 per cent of his match fee at a hearing before match referee Chris Broad.
Gambhir was slapped with a level-two report and faced a fine of up to 100 per cent of his match fee and/or a one-match suspension. Watson gained some belated revenge when he bowled the plucky opener yesterday but not before Gambhir had hammered 206 off the Aussie attack.
What mystified some officials, however, was why Gambhir wasn't reported for "inappropriate or deliberate physical contact in the course of play".
Eyebrows were raised when it was revealed Gambhir had been found guilty of "inappropriate physical contact" in an on-field scuffle with Pakistani Shahid Afridi in a one-day match in Kanpur last November.
Gambhir was fined 65 per cent of his match fee and Afridi 95 per cent on that occasion by match referee Roshan Mahanama.
International Cricket Council rules state that if a player is found guilty of the same offence twice within 12 months, the charge - and penalty - are upgraded.
In Gambhir's case that would have meant a level-three penalty and a ban of between two and four Tests or four to eight one-day internationals.
This would almost certainly have seen the series' leading runscorer sit out next week's final Test in Nagpur.
While Watson and Gambhir faced the music, Simon Katich was lucky to have escaped censure after his row with Gambhir in the shadows of stumps on Wednesday threatened to get physical.
Their spat began when Gambhir lofted the part-time spinner for four, prompting the Australian to show his displeasure.
Tension escalated in Katich's next over when he blocked Gambhir from taking a single after he misfielded off his own bowling and the ball rebounded off the stumps. It's understood Gambhir said to Katich: "You are a f - - -ing cheat".
Umpire Billy Bowden stood between the pair as the war of words exploded and threatened to become physical.
India declared at 7-613 with both Gambhir and Laxman posting double centuries and at stumps Australia were 0-50 in reply with openers Katich (29) and Matt Hayden (16) surviving a testing final hour.
WELL WHAT DO YOU THINK, WAS IT ENTIRELY GAMBHIRS FAULT, OR WAS HE TEMPTED. DO YOU THINK THAT GAMBHIR IS REALLY "COC KY", IN MY OPINION THIS ARE SOME THINGS THAT HAPPENS WHEN ONE OF THE TEAMS ARE" BEATING THE HELL OUT OF THAT OTHER ONE", BUT BANNING IS NOT A OPITION. I REALLY BELIEVE THAT EVERY ONE WILL BE "COC KY" WHEN YOU HIT A DOUBLE CENTURY AGAINST THE WORLDS BEST TEAM. THE ONE MATCH BAN WAS UNCALLED FOR. THE AUSTRALIANS WEREN'T CLEAN HANDED EITHER, THEY TEMPTED HIM INTO THIS AS YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED, IN THE MATCH, AS FOR THE HITTING IS CONCERNED, IT WAS NOT ADEQUATE NOR CAN BE JUSTIFIED,BUT CAN BE DEBATED.
(ALL THE BOLD LETTERING IS MY WRITING)
THIS WAS MY FIRST POST THAT I ACTUALLY WROTE SO PLEASE LEAVE UR OPINION ON THE ANALYSIS.[/color]
